James 4:6 “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
“We as a nation are a humble people.” Wait, is that what Biden said? As Christians, we know you can only receive God’s grace by humbly admitting you need it. Humility is an endearing quality; we are naturally drawn to humble people. Humility builds bridges between people. But Biden said the opposite.
“Today, I want to send a message to the LGBTQ community – especially to transgender children: You are loved. You are heard. You belong. The People’s House – your house – sends a clear message to the country and to the world. America is a nation of pride.” This was President Biden on June 10th from the White House lawn, announcing America as a nation of pride with his example of the LGBTQ community.
In ‘Mere Christianity,’ CS Lewis defines pride as anti-God and the main attribute of Satan: “The essential vice, the utmost evil, is pride. It was through pride that the devil became the devil. Pride leads to every other vice. It is the complete anti-God state of mind.” The Bible backs up Lewis’s picture of who Satan is.
“You were in Eden, the garden of God… you were perfect in your ways from the day you were created, until sin was found in you. Your heart was proud because of your beauty.” (Ezekiel 28:13-17). Why is pride in your beauty and ways (behaviors) such an evil thing? God explains where Satan’s pride led him.
“How you have fallen from heaven, O Lucifer son of the morning… for you have said in your heart: ‘I will exalt my throne above the stars of God… I will be like the Most High.” (Isiah 14:12-14). Satan is not content with his life. He wants to rule – to impose his way on everyone. This is the evil of pride.
No one wants the policing of one’s sexual behavior in the privacy of one’s bedroom. But no one wants one’s sexual lifestyle imposed on others, especially children. Even Biden demonstrated this is true. While congratulating the LGBTQ community at the White House, some of the guests started flaunting their sexual behavior in front of the cameras. He was quick to denounce them and their behavior: “That behavior was simply unacceptable. Individuals in the video certainly will not be invited to future events.”
Biden knows that when it comes to sexual behavior, Americans are modest people. We will not tolerate sexual debauchery. Yet, people like Washington Post columnist Lauren Rowello write “We should include the kink community in Pride Month rallies and expose children to acts performed by kinks. This will help children learn about the vitality of the queer life.” This is where the LGBTQ wants to take America. This is Pride Month. Once again, CS Lewis can help us in knowing pride versus humility.
“Nearly all evils that people put down to greed or selfishness are far more the result of pride. It is pride which has been the chief cause of misery in every nation and every family since the world began.
Pride always means enmity – not only between people, but enmity to God. In God you come up against something which is in every respect immeasurably superior to yourself. Unless you know God as that – and know yourself as nothing in comparison – you cannot know God. A proud man is always looking down on things and people. As long as you are looking down, you cannot see something above you.
That raises a terrible question: how is it that people who are eaten up with pride can say they believe in God and appear to themselves very religious? I am afraid it means they are worshipping an imaginary God. The real test of being in the God’s presence is you forget about yourself altogether.
We must not think pride is something God forbids because He is offended at it, or that humility is something He demands as due His own dignity – as if God was proud. He is not at all worried about His dignity. He wants you to know Him; He wants to give Himself to you.
Do not imagine that if you meet a really humble person, he will be what most people call ‘humble.’ He will not be the sort of greasy, apologetic person who is always telling you that, of course, he is nobody. All you will think about him is that he seemed a cheerful, intelligent chap who took a real interest in what you said to him. He will not be thinking about being humble – he will not be thinking about himself at all.
If anyone would like to acquire humility, I can, I think, tell him the first step: it is to realize that one is proud. Nothing whatsoever can be done before it. If you think you are not conceited, it means you are very conceited indeed.” If June was renamed ‘Humility Month,’ could people follow Lewis’s advice?
