Psalm 27:1 “The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”
“A decline in courage is the most striking feature an outside observer notices in the West in our days. From ancient times, declining courage has been considered the beginning of the end.” This is part of Alexandr Solzhenitsyn’s 1978 Harvard Commencement Speech. He was booed off the stage. Here’s more.
“But should someone ask me if I would point to America today as a model to my country, I would answer NO. The mistake made by the West can be defined as rationalistic humanism: the proclaimed and enforced autonomy of man from any higher force above him, with man seen as the center of everything that exists.
As humanism became more and more materialistic, it made itself more useful by socialism and then by communism. Karl Marx said that ‘Communism is naturalized humanism.’ Remember, he wrote this in 1978.
Five years later, Solzhenitsyn delivered his famous speech ‘Godlessness: The First Step to the Gulag,” where he explained how Communism succeeded in eliminating God and Christian morality from society.
“Russia was steeped in Christianity. Faith was the unifying force of the nation. But in the 18th century Russia felt the first whiff of secularism; its subtle poisons permeated the educated classes and opened the path to Marxism. It was Dostoevsky who said the ‘revolution must necessarily begin with atheism.’ That is absolutely true. Militant atheism is not merely marginal to Communist policy; it is the central pivot.
Western societies are losing their religious essence as they thoughtlessly yield up the younger generation to atheism. Atheist teachers are bringing up a younger generation in hatred of their own society.”
But Solzhenitsyn, nearly 50 years ago, offered America the solution to its cowardice: “All attempts to find a way out of today’s world are fruitless unless we redirect our consciousness, in repentance, to the Creator.
Is there no Superior Spirit above man? Only moral criteria can help the West against Communism’s well planned world strategy. To defend oneself, one must be ready to die. There is no readiness in a society of materialism.” His message at Harvard’s 1978 Commencement: fearing man over God leads to cowardice.
Today, America’s Marxist, Anti-Christian culture that Solzhenitsyn warned us was coming is attacking Kansas City Chief kicker Harrison Butker for his courageous May 11 Commencement speech at Benedictine College. Here are sections from his speech, where his focus is on fearing God and not man.
“A life without God is not a life at all, and the cost of salvation is worth more than any career. If we are to be men and women for this time in history, we need to stop pretending the ‘Church of Nice’ is a winning proposition. We must speak and act in charity, but never mistake charity for cowardice.”
“The world says that we should keep our beliefs to ourselves whenever they go against the tyranny of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We fear speaking truth, because now, unfortunately, truth is in the minority.”
“Our own nation is led by a man who publicly and proudly proclaims his Catholic faith but is delusional enough to make the Sign of the Cross during a pro-abortion rally. He has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies that to many people it appears you can be both Catholic and pro-choice.”
“I am not talking about the deadly sin sort of pride that has an entire month dedicated to it, but the true God-centered pride that is cooperating with the Holy Ghost to glorify him.”
“Men, be unapologetic in your masculinity, fighting against the cultural emasculation of men. Part of what plagues our society is this lie that men are not necessary in the home or in our communities. As men, we set the tone of the culture, and when that is absent, disorder, dysfunction, and chaos set in.”
Jason Whitlock, founder and host of ‘Fearless’ in 2021, echoes the courage of Solzhenitsyn and now Harrison Butker by proclaiming the Lordship of Jesus Christ as he leads what he calls his “fearless army” to stand against what Solzhenitsyn predicted – the Marxist takeover of American culture – by exposing the lies of our post-Christian culture as he compares and contrasts them to the truth found in the Bible.
While we as Christians may feel discouraged that many churches are not standing up against American Marxism, take heart that God is raising up modern-day Solzhenitsyns to confront it.
