Psalm 139: 14-15 “My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, skillfully wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet unformed.”
“Dear VP Harris: I hear you make this statement all the time. Exactly what ‘faith’ are you talking about when you say you don’t have to abandon it to support abortion? Are you talking of the Christian faith that says all babies are made in God’s image (Gen. 1:26), God places them in the womb (Jeremiah 1:5) and we should not take any life unjustly (Luke 18:20)? Are you talking about that faith or some general ‘faith’ that says we’re good enough and smart enough to make our own decisions? What ‘faith’ are you talking about?”
This is NFL Super Bowl and Hall of Fame Coach Tony Dungy responding to Harris’s comment during the Presidential Debate and her follow-up post on X: “A survivor of a crime of violation to their body does not have the right to make a decision about what happens to their body. That is immoral, and one does not have to abandon their faith or deeply held beliefs to agree that the government, and certainly Donald Trump, should not be telling a woman what to do with her body.” What is the context of Harris’s statement?
Harris had earlier claimed Trump’s abortion platform would make no exception “even for rape and incest.” Then, in the debate, Harris stated “Understand, if Donald Trump were to be re-elected, he will sign the national abortion ban.” So, she objects to Trump preventing abortions for rape and incense. But then again, so does Donald Trump. Just before Harris’ statement, here is what Trump said.
“I believe in the exceptions for rape, incest and life of the mother,” Trump said during a debate. “I believe strongly in it. Ronald Reagan did also. 85% of Republicans knew exceptions are very important.”
Does this make Donald Trump more representative of Christianity than Harris? Trump has never claimed to be Christian, nor does he live his life in a way that promotes the values of Jesus Christ. And when it comes to aborting babies, Trump’s stance on the Florida law – which bans abortions after week 6 – is that “a 6-week abortion ban is too short.” In other words, abortions should be allowed for some time after 6 weeks.
So, how do we form our conviction on abortion? Can you be a Christian and pro-abortion? Pastor Phil Hopper of Abundant Life Church here in Lees Summit, MO, had this to say in a recent video on the upcoming MO ballet for Amendment 3, which looks to make abortion a Constitutional right in MO:
“Church family, if you are a Missouri resident, I want to make you aware of Amendment 3 – a ballot initiative where MO members will vote to permanently enshrine abortion as a Constitutional right in the state of MO.
This legislation will make abortion legal even to the moment of birth. It is so important that we, the body of Christ, be what Jesus has called us to be for such a time as this, when He said, ‘You are the salt of the earth.’ He was saying it is our voice – our influence – that should preserve society from decay.
We are to stand in the way of the decay of the day. There is only one position as a Christian when it comes to abortion. This is not a political issue. This is not about Left vs. Right. It is about Up versus Down.
Psalm 139 says that God saw you in your mother’s womb, yet being unformed. Even when you did not have a fully formed human body, God saw you as a fully formed human being. We need to stand against this legislation.” Pastor Hopper is echoing Coach Dungy: to be a follower of Jesus Christ means to stand against the abortion of babies. Translation: you cannot be a Christian and be pro-abortion.
Why does Pastor Hopper cite Psalm 139? Let’s break down Psalm 139:13-16 to see that God Himself, and not our subjective opinions, is saying all babies in the wombs of all mothers are human beings.
“You have formed my inward parts; You have COVERED me (“knitted me together”) in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; marvelous are Your works; that my soul knows very well. My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, skillfully WROUGHT (embroidered like needlework) in the lowest parts of the earth. Your eyes saw my substance, being yet UNFORMED (incomplete). In Your book they all were written, the days FASHIONED (molded into shape, as in potter working with clay to shape it) for me, when there yet were none of them.”
If you are a Christian, God’s Word is clear in many more verses than Coach Dungy and Pastor Hopper quoted. Abortion is murder because it takes the life of an innocent human being.
