Subject: The Christian Vote: Understanding God’s Position on Abortion
Romans 1:18 “The wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in righteousness…”
Partial-Birth Abortion is a procedure in which the abortionist pulls a living baby feet-first out of the womb and into the birth canal, except for the head, which the abortionist purposely keeps lodged just inside the cervix. The abortionist punctures the base of the baby’s skull with a sharp tool, after which a tube is inserted into the wound and the baby’s brain is removed with a powerful suction machine, collapsing the child’s skull. Then the abortionist delivers of the dead baby either fully intact or in pieces.
With millions watching, Hillary Clinton told us all that she is a strong advocate for it. Donald Trump made it clear he is pro-life, turned and looked at her directly, and told her to especially kill a child who is within days of birth is wrong. If you are a Catholic or an Evangelical Christian, and you are still struggling over who to vote for based on both candidate’s deficient moral character, this one moment in the debate should settle it for you on where we as a nation will be heading depending on which candidate is elected.
But how important is abortion to Christians? What about immigration, poverty, terrorism or the election of the next Supreme Court justice? Here’s 3 arguments I’ve heard for why abortion isn’t the deciding issue for Christians in the election: 1) Trying to ban abortion is futile, so it’s a bad bet to sacrifice other principles on that one altar, 2) God has given the mother the power of life and death over her unborn child, and 3) God hasn’t given us a standard for how to best love your neighbor, so why think the abortion issue is it?
Maybe we ought to ask God what He thinks? Starting in Romans 1:18 of the New Testament, the apostle Paul tells us how to ignite God’s wrath. As you read through the remainder of chapter 1 of Romans, Paul explains what it is that God will absolutely judge: a platform advocating unrestrained sexual freedom outside of His definition of marriage. Then we will look at what God says about babies in the womb.
For the first time in American politics, both parties are running on platforms that put God’s standards on sexual morality front and center. Pastor John MacArthur has said that one party’s position would mean “a government that passes out condoms so people can fornicate at will… and those who happen to get pregnant in the process… can kill the baby at the will of the mother, up and including the ninth month.”
If anyone thinks this sounds too incredible to believe, here are two examples that MacArthur was right. Starting this month, students at Lawrence High School and Free State High School can get condoms at no cost in their school’s health offices, with no parental permission needed. Students also receive training in how to safely and effectively use the condoms, in their sex education class. The second example I’ve already given you in this article’s opening paragraph: Clinton’s support of partial birth abortion.
Clinton also accused Trump of planning to defund Planned Parenthood, while she intends to continue their government funding. Listen to the Physicians Association of Planned Parenthood’s stance on unwanted pregnancy: “Unwanted pregnancy appears to be the second most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in our country… legal abortion is an effective, safe treatment for that condition.” Pregnancy is a sexually transmitted disease? America aborts 1.5 million babies a year. That equates to 1 of every 3 babies conceived are aborted. Planned Parenthood alone aborts one baby every 95 seconds!
Romans 1:30 defines a nation built on such a platform as “haters of God”. But God’s wrath against such sexual immorality has a more personal element to it. God says conception is His act. In the Old Testament book of Ruth, Ruth 4:13 says this: “Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife; and when He went in to her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.” God alone causes conception. He as Creator is personally, intimately involved in fashioning everything about every single person. He made you and every person ever conceived. Creating life in the womb is His personal, sacred act and, as Psalm 127:3 says, His gift to mankind: “Behold, children are a gift from the Lord.”
That makes abortion an anti-God act. No wonder He is furious. It is promoting the murder of what He has created. God has not given this power to the mother. Nor is it futile to stand against abortion. And as far as how to best love your neighbor? As Pastor MacArthur says, “No one is more a neighbor than an infant in a mother’s womb. If that’s not that mother’s neighbor, then there is no such thing as a neighbor.”
