Subject: America’s Moral Bankruptcy: Why True Change is only through Jesus Christ
Isaiah 59:12 “Our transgressions are multiplied before You, and our sins testify against us; for our transgressions are with us, and as for our iniquities, we know them.”
As we begin the Christmas season, many Americans are optimistic that we can “fix” this country by electing someone who will bring change. But America’s problems run much deeper. America is in the midst of a moral collapse that is destroying us from within. If we do not address it, it will destroy the nation we all love.
The facts of this moral collapse come from two sources. Fact 1, teenager’s sexual decay, comes from the American Sexual Health Association, America’s nonprofit authority for sexual health information. The second source addresses Facts 2-6, and comes from a 2015 article in National Review by Dennis Prager.
Fact 1 = Teenager’s Sexual Decay: “The Centers for Disease Control and Infection estimate there are 19.7 million new STIs (sexually transmitted infections) every year in the US. The total annual cost of STIs is $15.6 billion. Each year, one in four American teens contracts an STD/STI, with half of all new STDs/STIs in 2000 occurring among youth ages 15 to 24. The total estimated costs of these new cases was $6.5 billion, with 90% coming from HIV and human papillomavirus (HPV).”
Fact 2 = The Decline of the Family: “48% of American children are born to a mother who is not married. 43% of American children live without a father in the home. About 50% of Americans over 18 are married, compared with 72% in 1960. Americans are having so few children that … in an increasing number of states, there are now more deaths than births.”
Fact 3 = The End of Male and Female: “At the core of the argument for this redefinition of marriage is that gender doesn’t matter… For the first time in recorded history — gender is regarded as meaningless. Indeed, increasingly gender doesn’t even exist; it’s merely a social construct imposed on children by parents and society based on the biological happenstance of their genitalia.”
Fact 4 = The Decline of Education: “American history is presented as the history of an immoral nation characterized by slavery, racism, colonialism, imperialism, economic exploitation, and militarism — not of a country that, more than any other, has been the beacon of freedom to mankind, and the country that has spent more treasure and spilled more blood to liberate other peoples than any other nation.” Fact 5 = The End of Right and Wrong: “At least two generations of American young people have been taught that moral categories are nothing more than personal (or societal) preferences. Recently, an incredulous professor of philosophy wrote an opinion piece in the New York Times titled ‘Why Our Children Don’t Think There Are Moral Facts.’ In it he noted, ‘Without fail, every value claim is labeled an opinion’.” Fact 6 = The End of Religion: “There are no moral truths because there is no longer a religious basis for morality. More than the Enlightenment, it was the Bible…that guided the Founders’ values. Not any more. Instead of being guided by a code higher than themselves, Americans are taught to rely on their feelings to determine behavior. Instead of giving moral guidance, children are asked, ‘How do you feel about it?’”
Our verse this week explains the cause behind America’s moral bankruptcy isn’t new. In 730 BC, God sent the prophet Isaiah to Israel because like us they chose to violate God’s standards for moral rightness. Verses 13-14 explain the root cause was Israel decided to revolt and separate themselves from God: “In…departing from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood. Justice is turned back, and righteousness stands afar off; truth has fallen in the street…”
But then, verses 15-19, God promises one day to send Someone to save us from our self-inflicted moral destruction. Someone will arrive who will intercede on our behalf and be our Savior from our sins: “Then the Lord saw it, and it displeased Him that there was no justice. He saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor; therefore His own ARM brought salvation for Him… For HE put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on HIS head.”
Who is this “Savior” who can rescue us from our moral bankruptcy? Isaiah 59 is one of many prophecies of Jesus Christ, who verified Isaiah’s words in John 3:17: “God did not send His Son into the world to condemn it, but that the world might be saved through Him.” America’s hope is not in a new President. It is in the Lord Jesus Christ. He has promised to fix each of us by forgiving us for our sins, if we let Him.
