Darwin and America’s Scientific Racism Part 2 – The “Human Zoo”

Acts 17:26  God has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth…”

In our verse this week, the apostle Paul explains to a group of skeptics that the one true God, the God of the Bible, created all men as equal from an original man and woman named Adam and Eve.

God did this, Paul says, so that all humanity should “seek the Lord”. There is no ethnic group that originated from any other method than the divine creative work of the God of the Bible, and no people group is superior to another intellectually, physically, biologically, or in any other way one can imagine.

“At some time, the civilized races of man will exterminate and replace throughout the world the savage races.” This directly contradicts the Bible. With cancel culture zealots zeroed in on anything racist, how did they miss this one? This is a quote from the 1871 book “Descent of Man” by its author, Charles Darwin.

Darwinian Evolution has gotten a pass from cancel culture because, since its inception in 1851, it has taken on the authority of science. Yet it has provided the template for scientists to categorize Africans as biologically inferior to European whites. Darwin claimed that the evolutionary break between humans and apes occurred with Africans, which led to Ernst Haeckel’s infamous depiction of evolution’s path from ape to human that showed the European whites as most advanced and African blacks as closest to apes.

Darwin’s claim that humans evolved from apes is still in biology textbooks today: “To understand the story of human evolution, we must understand both our ancestry and our relationship to our closest living kin. Humans are members of the mammalian order of Anthropoid Primates (marmosets, monkeys, apes, humans). Many of our behaviors and characteristics are similar to primates, and some are uniquely human” (Modern Biology by Holt, Rinehart, Winston, Advanced Biology class, Lees Summit High School, MO).

Evolution’s scientific racism came to a head at the 1906 St. Louis World’s Fair with the infamous “Human Zoo” exhibit. Anthropologist William McGee, one of America’s leading scientists and former President of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, displayed living representatives of what he and scientists from Harvard, Princeton and Columbia considered to be “lower stages of the human race.”

Professor Pamela Newkirk of NY University documents scientific racism in her book ‘Spectacle: The Astonishing Life Ota Benga’. Newkirk takes us through Congolese pygmy Ota Benga’s life. Displayed in the Bronx Zoo’s Monkey House as a ‘missing link’ in 1906, the NY Zoological Society claimed he was valuable for visitors to grasp the science of evolution and see the “obvious similarities” with monkeys.

Black pastor James H. Gordon, Superintendent of the Harlem Colored Orphan Asylum in Brooklyn, publicly confronted the blatant racist display: “Our race, we think, is depressed enough, without exhibiting one of us with the apes. We think we are worthy of being considered human beings, with souls. The Darwinian theory is absolutely opposed to Christianity, and a public demonstration in its favor should not be permitted.”

The New York Times fought Pastor Gordon, siding with the “science” of evolution to defend Benga’s promotion as “sub-human”: “The pygmies are very low in the human scale… The idea that men are all much alike except as they have had or lacked opportunities for getting an education is now far out of date.”

Nearly 100 years later, in 2001, Mayor Sharon Weston Broom of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was a member of the House of Representatives. She proposed Resolution 74, to teach students the history of scientific racism based on Darwin’s views on races as well as how his theory has been exploited to promote racism. Her resolution also supported teaching students how recent scientific findings support racial equality.

”I am not asking that Evolution be taken out of the schools. I am asking that our schools be made aware that Darwin promoted the justification of racism by his definitive works ‘The Origin of Species’ and ‘The Descent of Man’. I understand that racism had been in effect before Darwin. This has never been denied. Yet he was the originator of a scientific justification for racism as well as giving wings to modern racism.” Evolutionary proponents attacked Broome as a Christian supremacist adhering to a ‘hate-based’ ideology. Her resolution only passed by deleting all references to Charles Darwin and Ernst Haeckel. It was as if scientific racism had never happened! This evil of scientific racism continues to be hidden from the public, as well as the biblical truth that all of humanity is created as equals by God and is equally precious to Him.

  1. The DNA of people from different parts if the earth is different. That makes their physical traits, including brain structure different. Personality, behavior and culture all come from DNA. Like it or not, people in different groups, including what is referred to as racial groups, are different, both in looks and behavior..
