Revelation 12:11 “They overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony.”
“We always end with our prayers and songs, and that song says that our God is a loving God.” This was Fiji’s Olympic Rugby team captain, Jerry Tuwai, explaining why the team gathered in a circle on the field to sing a worship hymn to Jesus Christ after winning the Gold Medal with a 27-12 defeat over New Zealand,
Usually, when Olympians win medals, they proudly carry their nation’s flag around the field and their families back home cheer. The Fiji rugby team took it to a new level – their praise song was Revelation 12:11 about Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, whose shed blood on the Cross at Calvary is the source of the power through which they overcome the devil’s accusations and the trials of life.
Here are the words as they sang: “We have overcome; We have overcome; By the Blood of the Lamb, In the Word of the Lord; We have overcome.”
This verse has tremendous significance for Christians. It is a prelude to the moment when Satan and all those opposing God are defeated at Christ’s return to reign as our Conquering King, through whom we as Christians also have overcome the attacks of Satan. Here’s how these verses are laid out in the Bible.
“Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, ‘Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come; for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death” (Revelation 12:10-11).
The entire Fiji rugby team sung these verses because they wanted millions of people around the world to know that they have overcome Satan’s accusations against them through their faith in the achievement of their Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on the Cross, whose shed blood left Satan powerless against them. The 2016 Gold medal team captain Akapusi Qera expanded on how much the rugby team families depend on Jesus Christ: “We know that there is a God that we serve and He provides for us and is there for us. We know that our strength is not from us but from God, and it’s all God’s plan. Faith helps keep us together. It helps bond us as a team.” Thanks to the Fiji rugby team, the world now knows what true worship looks like.
