California’s New Abortion Law – How One Church Is Standing Up for Righteousness

Proverbs 16:12 “It is an abomination for kings to commit wicked acts…”

Last week, CA Governor Gavin Newsom approved 13 new Abortion Bills, including Bill AB 2223, known as the “Infanticide Bill”, which not only allows aborting unborn children all the way until birth but also killing babies after they are born. Let’s read sections of AB 2223 found on its website.

“1) AB 2223 would delete the requirement that a coroner hold inquiries for deaths related to or following known or suspected self-induced or criminal abortion.” So, AB 2223 stops a coroner from determining how a newborn died if the death is suspected to be from a self-induced or criminal abortion.

“2) AB 2223 prohibits using the coroner’s statements on the certificate of fetal death to bring a criminal prosecution or civil cause of damages against a person with respect to their pregnancy or a person who aids a pregnant person in exercising their rights under the Reproductive Privacy Act.” So, AB 2223 prevents using a coroner’s report to prosecute someone for aborting their baby under any circumstances.

“3) AB 2223 prohibits a person from being subject to civil or criminal liability, or otherwise deprived of their rights, based on their actions or omissions with respect to their pregnancy or pregnancy outcome.” As Right to Life VP of Legal Affairs Susan Arnall explained, “A mother, her boyfriend, the babysitter, can starve, beat or shake a 3-week-old baby to death and under AB 2223 no one can investigate.”

“4) AB 2223 authorizes a party whose rights are protected by the Reproductive Privacy Act to bring a civil action against an offending state actor when those rights are interfered with…” So, AB 2223 allows women to sue any police department or legal authority that arrests or charges them for hurting or killing their baby.

Attorney Matt McReynolds, with the Pacific Justice Institute, had this to say: “CA lawmakers have crossed a red line by seeking to legitimize the killing of hours-old and even week-old infants. This is not about expanding abortion rights; this is a degree of evil that the overwhelming majority of Americans, regardless of how they identify politically, cannot stomach. We are working to defeat this insane and diabolical bill.”

Where is the church on this? Should the church get involved in “politics”? John MacArthur, Pastor of Grace Community Church, answered this question in the following excerpts of his letter to Governor Newsome.

“Sir, Scripture teaches that it is the chief duty of any civic leader to reward those who do well and to punish evildoers (Romans 13:1–7). The Word of God pronounces judgment on those who call evil good and good evil (Isaiah 5:20). My goal in writing is not to contend with your politics, but to plead with you to hear and heed what the Word of God says to men in your position.

In mid-September, you revealed to the entire nation how thoroughly rebellious against God you are when you sponsored billboards across America promoting the slaughter of children, whom He creates in the womb (Psalm 139:13–16; Isaiah 45:9–12). Furthermore, you chose words from the lips of Jesus without admitting that in the same moment He gave the greatest commandment: ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength’ (Mark 12:30). You cannot love God as He commands while aiding in the murder of His image-bearers.

My concern, Governor Newsom, is that your own soul lies in grave, eternal peril. ‘Each one of us will give an account of himself to God’ (Romans 14:12). One day, you will stand in the presence of the Holy God who created you, who is your Judge, and He will demand that you give an account for how you have flouted His authority in your governing, and how you have twisted His own Holy Word to rationalize it.

My plea to you is that you would not go to that day of judgment apart from receiving forgiveness and righteousness through faith in Christ alone. There is salvation for those who repent. Christ purchased full redemption for all who will turn from wickedness and trust fully in Him as Lord and Savior.

Our church, and countless Christians nationwide, are praying for your full repentance. Please respond to the gospel, forsake the path of wickedness you have pursued, turn to Christ, ask for forgiveness, and use your office to advance the cause of righteousness (as is your duty) instead of undermining it.’

We desperately need pastors like John MacArthur, to confront evil being flaunted in America today.
