Jeremiah 6:15 “Are they ashamed of their loathsome conduct? No, they have no shame at all. They do not even know how to blush.”
The book of Jeremiah, written over the 46 years of his ministry (626-580 BC), God sends Jeremiah to pronounce judgment against Israel for their incredible level of immorality. As our verse this week says, Israel’s conduct became so loathsome that the people did not even blush over what they were doing.
The parallels between Israel and America, from their founding to their later rejection of God, are so striking that its worth revisiting history to see His stance on national morality and our guilt in rebelling against Him.
In 600 BC, God reminded Jerusalem, the capital city of Israel, how they were so devoted to Him when He delivered them out of the bondage from Egypt to make them a nation: “I remember the devotion of your youth, how as a bride you loved Me and followed Me through the desert” (Jeremiah 2:2).
On April 18, 1775, John Adams and John Hancock were at the home of Reverend Jonas Clarke. British General Gage announced to the colonists that if they would lay down their arms, all would be forgiven, except for Samuel Adams and John Hancock, who were singled out as the instigators. That same night, Paul Revere arrived at Reverend Clarke’s home to warn them that the Redcoats were approaching.
The very next morning British Major Pitcairn proclaimed “Disperse, ye villains, lay down your arms in the name of George the Sovereign King of England.” Reverend Clarke responded with what is known as the Battle Cry of the American Revolution: “We recognize no Sovereign but God and no King but Jesus.”
God raised up godly leaders for Israel (Moses, Joshua) and America (John Adams, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson) to deliver both nations out of bondage (from Egypt and then from England).
As another great patriot, Patrick Henry, boldly declared America as founded on Jesus Christ: “It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians: not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” America and Israel have this is common.
But things changed in both Israel and America. Throughout Jeremiah, God charges Israel with abandoning Him to do whatever they wanted – that is the religion of secular humanism: “The priests did not ask, ‘Where is the Lord?’ The judges did not know Me, the leaders rebelled against Me…” (Jeremiah 2:8). To put this in context today, the churches often do not hold up the name of Jesus Christ in our culture, America’s legal system violates our Constitution, and our appointed government leaders are almost completely secular.
In Jeremiah 3:1-5, God lights up Israel for their pretense in calling Him their father while they live in total wickedness: “You have lived as a prostitute with many lovers – would you know return to Me?… You have defiled the land with your prostitution and your wickedness… You have the brazen look of a prostitute; you refuse to blush with shame. Have you not just called to Me: ‘My Father, my Friend from my youth, will You always be angry? Will Your wrath continue forever?’ This is how you talk, but you do all the evil you can.”
In 2015 at the National Prayer Breakfast, when Barack Obama made the comment that Americans should reject the idea that “somehow we alone are in possession of the truth”, he was speaking to his own view on truth – moral relativism – that truth cannot be known. Yet, Jesus Christ, the One whom America once claimed as the foundation of America’s birth, claimed to be “The Way, the Truth and the Life” (John 14:6).
Now that America, like Israel, has abandoned Christ as the Absolute Source of Truth, wickedness reigns: 1) Abortion even after birth; 2) Critical Race Theory, same sex marriage, transgenderism, gender neutrality all taught in public schools; 3) Child puberty blockers; 4) Defund our Police; 5) Explosive rise in violent crime and destruction of billions of dollars of property in the name of “social justice”; 6) Open borders for the influx of illegal immigrants and drug trafficking; 7) Freedom of speech banned at universities and on social networks; 8) Freedom of choice banned with a government-mandated COVID vaccine; 9) Our troops humiliated in Afghanistan by giving in to terrorist demands. These have all happened in the past 2 years!
With a radical leftist government in charge in America, this will continue at least 2 more years unless we as a nation repent now. And we have this opportunity next week in the midterm elections. Vote for candidates who, through their love for Jesus Christ and America, will institute moral policies while ending wickedness.
