How can Israel Survive Iran’s Genocidal Attacks? Because God Protects Israel

Psalm 121:4   “Behold, he that keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”

On October 1, the largest one-day missile attack in Middle East history happened when Iran deployed 200 ballistic missiles at Israel. This attack is nearly one year after the October 7, 2024 massacre of 1,200 Israelis by Hamas, including Hamas taking 251 hostages (of which it is believed there are still 100 alive).

Israel, about the size of New Jersey, is only 1.3% the size of Iran. And Israel, with 8,522 sq miles of land, is only 0.1% the size of the Arab nations surrounding Israel, which make up over 5,400,000 sq miles all of land. Israel’s population of 9.7 million is composed of 80% native-born Israelis and, interestingly enough, 20% Arabs (you will not find many Israelis living in Arab nations). The Arab states surrounding Israel, all of whom are hostile to Israel’s existence, contain 450 million Arabs, with Iran’s population alone at 89 million.

With Israel at only 10% the population of Iran (and only 2% the population of all surrounding hostile Arab nations), it must be seen as a miracle that not only has survived and thrived since its 1948 inception, but the October 1st missile attack by Iran had no effect – only 2 casualties. With its advanced “Iron Dome” protection system, Israel intercepted nearly all these missiles. How is Israel able to not only defend itself, but now wage a war on 3 fronts: the south against Hamas, the north against Hezbollah, and Iran?

We are witnessing the covenant promise of the God of the Bible to defend and protect Israel forever. Israel cannot be destroyed because the Bible says so, and that declaration comes from YHWH Himself:

Deuteronomy 7:6-8: “For you are a people holy to the LORD your God. The LORD your God HAS CHOSEN YOU out of all the peoples on the face of the earth to be His people, His treasured possession. The Lord did not set His affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you and kept the oath He swore to your forefathers that He brought you out with a mighty hand and redeemed you from the land of slavery, from the power of Pharaoh king of Egypt.” God acknowledges His sworn oath to protect Israel.

Isaiah 41:8-9: “But you, Israel, are My servant. Jacob, whom I have chosen, the descendants of Abraham My friend. You whom I have taken from the ends of the earth, and called from its farthest regions, and said to you, ‘You are My servant, I HAVE CHOSEN YOU and have not cast you away.”

Genesis 12:2-3: “I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” God has certainly made tiny Israel a great nation.

But what does God mean when He says, “all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you”? We get a hint at this in John 4:22, when Jesus’s famous conversation with the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well:  “You (Samaritans) worship what you do not know. We (Jews) know what we worship, for salvation is from the Jews.” The blessing that the Jewish nation brings to the world is the Messiah – the Author of salvation.

Isaiah 12:2-3 says “Behold, God is my salvation, I will trust and not be afraid. For YHWH, the LORD, is my strength and my song. He has also become my salvation. Therefore, with joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.” The phrase “The LORD has become my salvation” is YHWH Shua, the Hebrew name for Jesus, the Savior. But then, what is meant in verse 3 by “drawing water from the wells of salvation”?

We go back to John 4:10-13 and dig deeper into Jesus’s talk with the Samaritan woman: “Jesus said to her, ‘If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.’ The woman said to Him, ‘Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?’

Jesus said to her, ‘Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again, but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. The water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.” Jesus points to Isaiah 12:3’s “drawing water from the wells of salvation” because He is YHWH Shua – He is the Lord who is our Savior! Israel has indeed blessed all the earth with Jesus Christ!

As our verse this week says, God is vigilant to save Israel from its enemies. And as we have shown, Jesus Christ is the ultimate Savior for everyone whether a Jew, Arab, or any other ethnicity.
